45 Years of Strength, Service, and Sobriety: How Former U.S. Army Specialist Glenn Coplin Inspires Hope

Former U.S. Army Specialist Glenn Coplin in Los Angeles, honored through Military Warriors Support Foundation’s Transportation4Heroes program recognizing his service in Vietnam and lifelong commitment to supporting fellow veterans.

In a heartfelt celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army, Military Warriors Support Foundation, in partnership with Chase Auto, Lithia & Driveway, and Subaru of Riverside, proudly presented a payment-free vehicle to Former U.S. Army Specialist Glenn Coplin a Vietnam veteran whose life story is a testament to resilience, transformation, and service beyond the battlefield.

Coplin, who now resides in Grand Terrace, California, first enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967 at the age of 17. Facing challenges at home, he turned to military service for a sense of purpose and direction. After completing training in explosives and combat engineering, he was stationed on the Korean Demilitarized Zone before volunteering for a deployment to Vietnam.

During his time with the 39th Combat Engineer Battalion of the 23rd Infantry Division (Americal), Coplin was assigned to high-risk demolition and minesweeping missions. These critical operations, which took him through some of the most hazardous regions near Chu Lai and Tam Ky, often placed him directly in harm’s way. He survived multiple explosions during his deployment, including a blast that left him temporarily deaf and disoriented. A second explosion just before the end of his tour added to his injuries.

Returning home in 1970, Coplin, like many Vietnam veterans, faced a nation that didn’t yet understand how to honor his sacrifice. The emotional toll of war, coupled with physical wounds, led him down a difficult path marked by depression and substance abuse.

Everything began to shift in 1978 when he took a one-way bus ride to California with just $250 in his pocket, determined to rebuild his life. He eventually found support at a VA program in Loma Linda, where a fellow veteran’s encouragement on day one helped him choose a new path. That decision led to 45 years of sobriety, decades of healing, and a renewed mission to serve others.

Today, Coplin continues to give back especially to his fellow veterans. He’s been a long-time participant in group counseling and is deeply involved in mentoring post-9/11 veterans, helping them navigate the challenges of recovery and find hope in the process. His story of perseverance has become a beacon for those facing similar struggles.

Coplin’s achievements extend beyond his military honors, which include two Purple Hearts, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. He’s also built a diverse professional life working in construction, government security, and supervising major events in the entertainment industry. He holds licenses and certifications in contracting, Lean Six Sigma, and consulting, and he remains active in civic causes supporting American values.

The recent vehicle presentation in Los Angeles recognized not only Coplin’s military service but also his continued dedication to others. As part of Military Warriors Support Foundation’s Transportation4Heroes program, he’ll also receive a full year of financial and family mentorship a component that has helped program participants collectively eliminate more than $29 million in debt.

“This vehicle represents more than transportation,” said Coplin. “It’s peace of mind. It means I can continue supporting other veterans, attending appointments, and staying connected to my mission.”

The event was part of a larger effort to celebrate the U.S. Army’s legacy while giving back to those who’ve worn the uniform. Leaders from Chase Auto and Subaru of Riverside joined in recognizing Coplin’s achievements and honoring his journey.

“His story inspires us all,” said Casey Kinser, Executive Vice President of Military Warriors Support Foundation. “We are proud to stand with Glenn and proud of our continued partnership with organizations like Chase Auto, which make moments like this possible.”

In his free time, Coplin enjoys woodworking, spending time with his family, and cheering on his favorite football team, the Los Angeles Rams. He is a proud father of four and grandfather to six and a reminder that even after the toughest battles, there is always a way forward.

“I want other veterans to know that healing is possible,” he shared. “You don’t have to carry it all alone. There’s always hope and people who care.”
